Chapter 4 - THE FIRST TIME I COVERED FOR HIM

Three years earlier, Caleb punched a wall beside my head.
Not me.
The wall.
That distinction kept our marriage alive longer than it deserved.
We were arguing about his business.
A subcontractor had sued.
Caleb blamed me for questioning the invoices.
He hit drywall.
His knuckles bled.
I froze.
He immediately apologized.
Bought dinner.
Scheduled couples therapy.
Went twice.
Then stopped.
A year later, he grabbed my wrist hard enough to leave bruises.
I told urgent care I caught it under a cabinet door.
Why?
Not because he threatened me.
Because I was embarrassed.
Because I had spent years telling Jenna she exaggerated everything about Caleb.
Because admitting she was right felt like admitting I was stupid.
That was my mistake.
One of them.
Now Mara found the urgent-care record.
“Cabinet door?”
I stared at the blanket.
“No.”
“Did Caleb cause that injury?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell anyone then?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Shame.”
She nodded.
No sermon.
That old lie would become ammunition later.
Caleb’s attorney would say:
Rebecca lies about injuries.
Technically true.
I had lied to protect him.
May you like
The reason mattered.
The lie still existed.
