Chapter 22 - CALEB’S DEFENSE

Caleb’s lawyers attacked memory.

Reasonably.

Concussion.

Sedatives.

Trauma.

Changing statements.

They played the recording where I first told paramedics:

“I slipped.”

I had.

Because Caleb said:

“You slipped, Becca. Stay still.”

And I repeated it.

The defense asked:

“Mrs. Morgan, have you lied about an injury caused by Caleb before?”

“Yes.”

The courtroom shifted.

“To protect him?”

“Yes.”

“But you are capable of lying about injuries.”

“Yes.”

No escape.

Then:

“Could you now be lying to punish him financially?”

“No.”

“How should the jury know?”

I looked at them.

“They shouldn’t believe me because I’m sympathetic.”

Pause.

“They should look at the audio, the digital signatures, the hospital footage, the texts, the nurse, the devices, and everything that exists whether I speak or not.”

That was Helen’s favorite answer because she had not written it.
