Chapter 6 - THE RED FOLDER

Jenna went to my house with police standby to collect clothes and my laptop.

Caleb was not there.

Protective order temporarily barred contact.

She found my home office disturbed.

Not destroyed.

Drawers open.

Folders rearranged.

One missing.

Red accordion folder.

I kept important personal finance documents inside.

My late father’s estate.

Stock account.

Deed to a small cabin near Bend.

Caleb hated that cabin.

Dad left it to me before we married.

Separate property.

Worth about $640,000.

“Why would he take the folder?” Jenna asked.

“I don’t know.”

Then I remembered our argument before the fall.

You used my name.

I told Mara.

Used my name for what?

I could not remember.

My laptop helped.

Email from a bank.

Subject:

PERSONAL GUARANTEE CONFIRMATION — MORGAN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION.

Amount:

$875,000.

Guarantor:

Rebecca Morgan.

I had never guaranteed Caleb’s company debt.

The email was four days old.

Opened once.

The night before my fall.

My pulse climbed.

I searched sent mail.

Nothing.

Then trash.

A forwarded PDF to Caleb.

Message from me:

We need to talk about this tonight.

May you like

There.

That was the argument.
