Chapter 19 - THE CENTRAL TRUTH

The final answer came from my smartwatch.
I had forgotten I wore it.
It broke during the fall.
Police recovered it from my personal effects after Mara requested all damaged devices be preserved.
Sensors.
Not a camera.
Accelerometer.
Gyroscope.
Heart rate.
Location.
Then one unexpected feature.
Voice assistant activation.
At 7:42:51, my wrist struck something and triggered a five-second audio buffer.
Caleb’s voice:
“Give me the phone.”
Me:
“No.”
Caleb:
“Rebecca.”
Me:
“Get your hands off—”
Then another voice buffer because the watch registered a fall.
My scream.
Caleb:
“I barely pushed you—”
Silence.
That sentence changed the case.
Not:
I didn’t touch you.
Not:
You slipped.
I barely pushed you.
He later claimed he meant he pushed my phone away.
The physical evidence and earlier audio would be weighed.
Then Caleb’s own first call to 911 was recovered.
“My wife fell.”
Dispatcher:
“Did you see what happened?”
Long pause.
“She lost her balance.”
No mention argument.
No mention physical contact.
No mention medication.
He built the accident story within seconds.
The central truth was not that Caleb planned to kill me.
Evidence did not support that.
It was not that he engineered the stairs.
Could not prove that.
He had forged my financial guarantee.
Brought me to the site to pressure me.
Given me sedating medication without clearly telling me what it was.
Grabbed me when I tried to leave.
During the struggle, he pushed.
Whether he intended a small shove or understood how close I was to the open stairwell, I went over.
Then instead of telling paramedics the full truth, he called it a simple loss of balance.
When my concussion and medication left me confused, he used the confusion.
He activated a questionable power of attorney.
Drew money from the business credit line.
Tried to transfer me away from the hospital.
And when paperwork stopped working, he came into my room and tried to physically drag me out.

The fall had been impulsive.
Everything afterward was deliberate.
