Chapter 11 - Daniel’s mistake

Daniel wanted me to believe he had known nothing.

Not true.

He knew Rachel wanted money from the duplex.

He knew her side business had debt.

He knew Dad had already loaned them money.

He knew Rachel had spoken to a mortgage broker.

What he did not know:

The amount.

The use of his signature.

The timing.

I asked:

“Why didn’t you shut it down?”

He looked exhausted.

“I told her no.”

“Then?”

“She said it was preliminary.”

“And?”

“I left for Indianapolis.”

I laughed bitterly.

“What does travel have to do with it?”

“Nothing.”

Exactly.

Daniel had become conflict-avoidant.

Every financial conversation with Rachel turned into:

You don’t believe in me.

You think your sister matters more.

Your mother would have helped us.

Daniel learned to postpone.

He told himself:

I said no.

Therefore problem resolved.

It had not.

He apologized later.

Not to me first.

To Noah.

Because his eight-year-old son had heard adults discussing financial paperwork and decided Dad needed warning.

That was not a child’s job.
