Chapter 21 - My relationship with Dad disappears

For eighteen months I did not see my father.
No birthday.
No Christmas.
No hospital visit when he had a minor procedure.
Daniel handled updates.
Some relatives called me cruel.
I asked one question:
“If your father struck you while you were on the floor, how long would you need?”
Nobody answered usefully.
Dad sent letters.
First:
I lost my temper.
I returned it unopened after reading that sentence through the envelope window? No.
That would be melodramatic.
I read it.
Did not answer.
Second:
I should never have taken the crutch from you.
Better.
Then:
I told myself you were disrespecting the family because I could not accept that you were entitled to say no about property you owned.
Better still.
Then:
Rachel’s lies do not excuse my violence.
I saved that one.
