Chapter 6 - The first signature
Two days after the birthday assault, Daniel received an email from a regional lender.
Subject:
Hale Street refinance documentation update.
He had never spoken to that lender.
His face went white.
We sat at my attorney’s office with my lawyer, Dana Mitchell.
No relation to any general.
Just Dana.
She opened the PDF.
Preliminary borrower-consent package.
Dad listed as primary applicant.
Daniel and I listed as co-owners.
My signature blank.
Daniel’s signature present.
Electronic.
He stared.
“I didn’t sign that.”
Dana asked:
“Have you signed anything relating to this property recently?”
“No.”
“Anything that could have been reused?”
Daniel thought.
“Tax authorization last year.”
“Digital signature?”
“Yes.”
Dana closed the document.
“We do not decide forgery from appearance.”
Thank God for lawyers.
She contacted lender counsel.
Requested preservation.
Daniel filed a written dispute.
No dramatic police raid.
The lender paused the application.
Then asked:
“Who submitted the package?”
Initial broker records indicated the documents came from an email account used by Rachel.
Rachel said she believed Daniel had authorized her to handle preliminary paperwork.
