Chapter 14 - The $120,000

Why one hundred twenty thousand?
Necessary duplex repairs:
$31,400.
Broker fees and reserve:
Around $8,000.
Remaining proposed cash-out:
Roughly $80,000.
Rachel wanted $72,000 directed toward high-interest personal and business debt.
Another $8,000 as operating cushion.
Dad said he understood only that “some” proceeds would help Daniel’s family after repairs.
How much did he know?
His messages showed more than he admitted.
Rachel:
If I can clear cards, we can finally breathe.
Dad:
Your mother would rather family use equity than pay 24 percent to banks.
Daniel and I stared at that.
Mom had specifically written the opposite principle.
No private debt from another family member should be pushed onto the property.
Dad dismissed her memorandum as nonbinding.
Legally, mostly true.
Morally?
Different.

He had turned Mom’s property into an argument against Mom’s stated wishes.
That hurt more than the money.
