Chapter 9 - I make the family group chat worse

I was furious.

That is not a defense for stupidity.

Three nights after the party, my cousin Lindsey texted:

Everyone is saying Rachel says you staged it.

I asked:

Who is everyone?

She sent screenshots.

Family chat.

Rachel’s sister.

Dad’s brother.

People who had not been at the party.

I had a still frame from the tablet recording.

Rachel’s hands on my back.

I posted it into the extended family group.

Then wrote:

If anyone needs help understanding “accidental,” use your eyes.

Satisfying for twenty seconds.

Then Lindsey downloaded it.

Someone forwarded it.

By morning, a cropped version appeared on Facebook.

Noah’s birthday decorations visible.

Children partly visible in background.

I felt sick.

Daniel called.

“What did you do?”

“I sent one still to family.”

“Now Noah’s party is online.”

“I didn’t post it publicly.”

“You sent it to twenty-three people.”

He was right.

Rachel’s lawyer argued we were trying to generate public pressure.

The still itself remained authentic.

No evidentiary catastrophe.

But I had helped turn a child’s birthday into content.

I apologized to Noah.

Not with adult legal details.

“I shared part of your video with too many people.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“I was mad.”

“Dad said don’t post kids.”

“Dad is right.”

He looked delighted that I admitted Daniel was right.

I hated that.

Then:

“Can you delete it?”

“Yes.”

I did.

May you like

Could not delete everyone else’s copies.

That was my fault.
