Chapter 12 - Noah was not our investigator
Everyone wanted to ask Noah what he heard.
Police.
Lawyers.
Relatives.
Daniel and I agreed:
No.
Not casually.
He gave one age-appropriate forensic statement because he had called Daniel before the assault and because parts of the pre-party conversation could matter.
The interviewer asked:
What did you hear?
Noah said Mom and Grandpa talked in the dining room.
Mom said Aunt Rebecca was “the last problem.”
Grandpa said:
“She’ll sign when she sees everyone agrees.”
Noah asked:
“What are you signing?”
Rachel told him:
“Grown-up papers.”
Later he heard:
“If Rebecca causes drama, we’ll tell Daniel she ruined the party.”
That sentence mattered.
Did it mean they planned to shove me?
No.
No evidence supported that.
It meant Rachel anticipated conflict and had already built an explanation.
Noah then called Daniel.
Noah did not know about debt.
Noah did not understand refinancing.
Noah did not discover forgery.
He heard adults saying things that made him uneasy.
He called his father.
