Chapter 22 - Rachel apologizes to Noah first
Rachel’s best apology was not to me.
It was to her son.
In therapy.
Daniel later told me only what Noah chose to share.
Rachel said:
“I made your birthday about a problem that belonged to adults.”
Noah asked:
“Why did you push Aunt Rebecca?”
Rachel said:
“Because I was angry she would not do what I wanted.”
“Was the cake her fault?”
“No.”
“Then why did you say it was?”
“Because I was embarrassed.”
Eight-year-old Noah thought for a long time.
Then:
“You lied fast.”
Children can be devastating.
Rachel laughed once through tears.
“Yes.”
Then she apologized for making him feel he needed to call his father secretly.
That mattered.
Noah should have been thinking about presents.
