Chapter 18 - The main truth

The central truth arrived without a dramatic confession.

Vanessa was not trying to kill me that night.

That was the first thing investigators eventually became confident about.

The concentration in the drink was dangerous because it was administered without my knowledge, but evidence did not support a planned lethal dose.

Her goal was impairment.

Why?

The gala had an after-party.

Afterward Vanessa planned to bring me back to my house, where a notary she knew was scheduled to stop by the next morning.

The explanation given to me would have been:

Finalizing our cohabitation agreement.

The documents prepared included more than that.

A healthcare authorization.

Limited financial power language.

And a revised beneficiary instruction worksheet.

None of them alone could instantly steal my company.

None automatically transferred Lily’s trust.

That part of online rumors was nonsense.

But Vanessa had been trying for months to increase her formal authority inside my household.

She believed I was too rigid when fully alert.

She had used her prescription medication at least once before to make me sleep without telling me.

Evidence for that previous event remained circumstantial.

At the gala, she intended to sedate me enough that I would be tired, compliant, and less likely to resist another round of financial and family discussions.

Not unconscious for days.

Not dead.

Controlled.

That was the truth.

And it was serious enough.
