Chapter 7 - “You’re not deaf”
Detective Mara Ellis asked me about Lily’s strange first sentence.
“You’re not deaf.”
I understood why it sounded important.
It was.
Just not medically.
Three weeks before the gala, Lily came to me upset.
She signed:
“Vanessa says you don’t hear me when you’re working.”
I assumed Vanessa meant I became distracted.
Fair.
I worked too much.
Then Lily clarified.
“Vanessa says Daddy cannot hear what Lily says unless Vanessa tells him.”
That was not true.
I could read my daughter’s sign.
Not perfectly.
But fluently enough for ordinary life.
Vanessa had apparently begun telling Lily that complex things needed to be “translated” through her.
Why?
Vanessa later said she was helping.
Lily experienced it differently.
At the gala, when she signed:
“You’re not deaf,”
she was telling me:
You understand me directly.
Do not let Vanessa explain me.
Then came the warning.

That sentence was not about hearing.
It was about authority.
