Chapter 8 - Lily’s mother

My wife, Abigail, died when Lily was eighteen months old.

A ruptured brain aneurysm.

No warning.

One ordinary Tuesday.

By Thursday I was signing hospital forms I still do not remember reading.

Abigail had been the first person to learn ASL after Lily’s diagnosis.

She attacked it like a second language exam she intended to win.

I followed.

After Abigail died, sign became something more than communication.

It was part of what remained of the family we had built together.

Vanessa knew that.

At first she respected it.

Then she began inserting herself between Lily and me in subtle ways.

“She means she’s tired.”

“She’s saying she wants to leave.”

“She’s upset because you said no.”

Sometimes Vanessa was right.

Sometimes Lily would glare and correct her.

I thought that was ordinary blended-family friction.

I did not see control forming around language.
