Chapter 2 - Nora says one word

Security arrived before police.
Hotel security, not armed officers.
Two men.
One woman.
They cleared a small area around our table.
I kept the glass in my hand until the security supervisor produced a clean tray and asked me to place it down myself.
No one drank from it.
No one dumped it.
No one performed some television chemistry experiment.
The supervisor covered the tray with an unused banquet dome.
Then had an employee stand beside it.
Vanessa said:
“This is insane.”
Nora stood near the service door.
She was shaking.
I asked:
“What did you see?”
The security supervisor interrupted.
“Sir, please don’t question witnesses.”
He was right.
I hated him for being right.
Vanessa said:
“You’re treating me like a criminal because a four-year-old misunderstood something.”
Lily watched her mouth even though she could not hear the words.
She understood tone through movement.
Bodies speak loudly.
I turned so Lily could see my hands.
“You are safe.”
She signed:
“Don’t drink.”
“I won’t.”
Vanessa saw the exchange.
Her mouth tightened.
Then Nora said one word.
“Powder.”
Vanessa snapped toward her.
Nora immediately looked frightened.
Security separated them.
The police were called.
The gala did not dramatically empty in ten seconds.
People stayed.
Whispered.
Recorded on phones despite staff asking them not to.
The foundation president eventually ended the event early.

I remember thinking how ridiculous the chandelier looked above all of us.
Too beautiful for the room we had become.
