Chapter 10 - MY FIRST MISTAKEI called Serena.
Against Daniel Morris’s advice.
Daniel was my family-law attorney.
Not related to any of us.
He had said:
“Do not contact either of them.”
I nodded.
Then called my sister at 1:12 a.m.
She answered.
“Victoria.”
I said:
“If Meadow had died, I would have killed you.”
Silence.
Then Serena:
“I know.”
I hung up.
Terrible call.
Not because I intended to kill her.
I did not.
Because written or recorded threats become facts detached from the emotion that produced them.
Serena preserved the voicemail notification and told her lawyer.
Dennis’s attorney later used my statement to argue I was volatile.
Daniel looked at me.
“You did exactly the thing I told you not to do.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m apparently stupid at one in the morning.”
He did not smile.
“Do not contact them again.”
