Chapter 6 - WHAT MEADOW SAWMeadow’s forensic interview happened two days later.

I did not sit in the room.

I watched from elsewhere with professionals.

The interviewer, Karen Willis, began with neutral subjects.

School.

Favorite color.

Dog she wanted but did not have.

Then:

“Tell me why you went to the hospital.”

Meadow squeezed the hem of her hospital shirt.

“I fell.”

“Tell me everything about the falling part.”

Meadow breathed.

“I went downstairs because I wanted juice.”

“What happened?”

“Dad and Aunt Serena were in the kitchen.”

“Then what?”

“They were kissing.”

My stomach folded inward.

Karen’s face did not change.

“What kind of kissing?”

Meadow made a disgusted expression.

“Like married people.”

Seven-year-old precision.

“What did you do?”

“I said, ‘Dad?’”

“Then?”

“Dad got mad.”

“What did he say?”

“He said go upstairs.”

“Did you?”

“I said I was telling Mom.”

My throat closed.

Karen waited.

Meadow continued:

“I ran.”

“Where?”

“Up the stairs.”

“What happened next?”

“Dad came behind me.”

“What did he do?”

“He grabbed me.”

“Where?”

Meadow touched her right upper arm.

The bruises.

“I pulled.”

“Then?”

“He said, ‘You didn’t see anything.’”

I stopped breathing.

“And then?”

“He pushed me.”

“Show me how.”

Karen used dolls only after Meadow had already described the action verbally.

Meadow demonstrated one hand from behind against the upper back.

Not a punch.

Not a throw.

A shove.

“What happened to Aunt Serena?”

“She screamed when I fell.”

“Did she push you?”

“No.”

“Did she touch you before you fell?”

“No.”

“What happened when you stopped falling?”

“I cried.”

“Who came?”

“Aunt Serena.”

“Dad?”

“He stood at the top.”

“What did he say?”

“He said, ‘Tell them you slipped.’”

There.

Then:

“Aunt Serena said, ‘Dennis, she could have died.’”

My anger shifted.

Not away from Serena.

Different shape.

She had not pushed Meadow.

May you like

She had recognized the danger.

Then she stayed.
