Chapter 3 - THE COPY HE DIDN’T KNOW ABOUTCloud systems are more complicated than people think.

Deleting a clip from an application does not always mean the underlying data disappears immediately.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes a customer-facing deletion marks a file for removal while provider backups persist temporarily.

Sometimes motion thumbnails survive separately.

Sometimes logs matter more than video.

The security company representative told Detective Aaron Brooks:

“Preserve the account immediately.”

A legal request followed.

Nobody promised recovery.

For six hours I believed the video was gone.

I sat beside Meadow’s hospital bed while she slept.

My mother, Judith, sat near the window.

She did not ask questions.

Good.

At 3:40 a.m., Detective Brooks called me into the hall.

“Your security provider preserved a server-side event package.”

I stopped.

“Video?”

“We believe so.”

“Believe?”

“It has to be downloaded and authenticated.”

“Can I see it?”

“Not yet.”

I hated him.

Good sign.

Careful people often feel cruel when you are desperate.

“Was Dennis arrested?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“We’re still establishing probable cause and clarifying the sequence.”

“He deleted the clip.”

“Yes.”

“He pushed her.”

“That is Meadow’s statement. We still investigate.”

I stepped toward him.

“She has a fractured shoulder.”

“Which is consistent with a staircase fall.”

“He caused the fall.”

“That is what we are working to prove or disprove.”

I wanted a uniform to transform my anger into certainty.

May you like

It refused.

So I went back to Meadow.
