Chapter 24 - THE VERDICTThe jury convicted Dennis on the principal child-abuse/assault-related offense supported by the evidence and on an evidence-tampering-related count.
He was acquitted of one more severe theory requiring a level of intent the jury did not find proved.
I was relieved.
Then angry that relief felt like celebration.
It wasn’t.
Sentencing came later.
The judge considered:
Meadow’s injury.
Dennis’s cover-up.
His lack of prior criminal record.
His role as her father.
His later admission.
Risk assessments.
Victim statements.
He received a meaningful period of incarceration followed by supervision and conditions.
Not forever.
Family court remained separate.
Criminal conviction did not automatically answer every future parenting question.
I hated that once.
Then understood why systems are separated.
