Chapter 14 - SERENA’S VERSIONSerena requested to speak through attorneys.
I refused to meet.
She gave a formal statement instead.
The affair began after one of my Guard weekends.
She had come over to help Dennis because Meadow had a stomach bug.
After Meadow slept, Serena and Dennis drank wine.
Talked about our marriage.
Dennis complained I was “never home mentally.”
Serena complained I treated her like a younger sister who needed rescuing.
They kissed.
Serena left.
Two weeks later, they began messaging.
Then affair.
Nothing about her explanation made it inevitable.
Loneliness.
Resentment.
Opportunity.
Excuses become seductive because they resemble causes.
Serena admitted something else.
Meadow had nearly discovered them twice.
The first time Dennis told her:
“Don’t tell Mom Aunt Serena was here so late. She’ll get mad.”
He turned secrecy into a game.
