Chapter 23 - DENNIS ON THE STANDAt criminal trial, Dennis testified.
Risky.
His lawyer asked:
“Did you intend to push Meadow down the staircase?”
“No.”
“Did you intend to injure her?”
“No.”
“What were you trying to do?”
“Stop her from running.”
Then the prosecutor.
“Why?”
Dennis looked toward the jury.
“She was upset.”
“About what?”
Pause.
“Seeing Serena and me.”
“Why did that require physical intervention?”
“It didn’t.”
Good answer.
Late.
“Did Meadow say she was going to tell her mother?”
“Yes.”
“Did that frighten you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you place your hand on Meadow?”
“Yes.”
“Did she fall immediately afterward?”
“Yes.”
“Did you then tell first responders she simply slipped?”
“Yes.”
“Did you delete the stairwell video?”
Dennis closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
He looked at me.
Then at Meadow’s empty seat.
She did not attend.
“Of losing my family.”
The prosecutor let silence do the work.
“You were afraid of losing your family after you pushed your daughter while hiding an affair with your wife’s sister?”
Objection.
Argumentative.

Reality did not need the sentence anyway.
