Chapter 17 - MEADOW GETS ANGRY AT MESix weeks after the fall, Meadow stopped speaking to me for an entire evening.

No reason I understood.

Then at bedtime:

“You always say Aunt Serena is good.”

I sat on the floor beside her bed.

“I used to.”

“You let her come over.”

“Yes.”

“You left me with her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I trusted her.”

Meadow’s face crumpled.

“You were wrong.”

There are moments as a parent when defending yourself would destroy something more important.

“Yes.”

She cried.

“I didn’t know Dad was bad.”

“I didn’t either.”

“You’re the mom.”

“I am.”

“You’re supposed to know.”

My eyes burned.

“I’m supposed to do my best with what I know. Sometimes I’m wrong.”

“I hate that.”

“So do I.”

She turned away.

Five minutes later she reached backward for my hand.

I stayed until she slept.
