Chapter 16 - WHY I HAD THE CAMERADennis accused me of surveillance.

“You put cameras everywhere because you never trusted me.”
False.
Partly.
The stairwell camera went in after my neighbor’s contractor theft.
But I kept cloud storage because of Dennis.
Not infidelity.
Temper.
Nine months before Meadow’s fall, Dennis threw a ceramic bowl during an argument.
It hit the wall.
Not me.
Meadow was asleep.
I told him:
“Never again.”
He apologized.
Went to counseling twice.
Stopped.
I considered leaving.
Didn’t.
Why?
One thrown bowl.
A good father.
Stress.
Mortgage.
Marriage.
All the ordinary arithmetic people perform before disaster turns every earlier warning into prophecy.
I never imagined he would touch Meadow.
That sentence haunted me.
My therapist later asked:
May you like
“Were you supposed to predict the future, or respond to what you knew?”
I hated that question enough to remember it.
