Chapter 5 - SERENASerena was my younger sister by five years.

When we were children, I packed her lunches.
Taught her to drive.
Took her to college orientation because Dad was recovering from surgery.
When I joined the Guard, she cried harder than Mom.
When I married Dennis, Serena stood beside me in blue and gave a speech about finally gaining a brother.
Three years before Meadow’s fall, Serena’s marriage ended.
Not spectacularly.
Her husband moved out after years of fighting.
No children.
Bad debt.
She needed somewhere to stay.
I gave her our basement guest suite.
“For two months.”
She stayed seven.
Then found an apartment ten minutes away.
But she remained woven into our house.
Picked Meadow up from school.
Had dinner with us.
Knew the garage code.
Knew where I kept spare keys.
Knew my work schedule.
Knew when Guard weekends took me away.

I trusted her enough not to think about trust.
That is the worst kind to lose.
