Chapter 19 - THE CENTRAL TRUTHDennis did not plan to hurt Meadow that afternoon.
Serena did not lure her toward the staircase.
There was no murder scheme.
No insurance plot.
No secret conspiracy to remove me.
The truth was smaller and more believable.
Dennis and Serena were having an affair.
Meadow saw them kissing.
Dennis panicked.
She said she would tell me.
He followed her toward the stairs.
Grabbed her.
She pulled away.
He pushed.
Maybe he intended only to stop her.
Maybe to turn her around.
Maybe anger took over.
Intent to kill was never supported.
But he deliberately put his hand against a running child near a staircase because protecting his secret mattered more in that instant than protecting her.
Then she fell.
Serena called 911.
Good.
Then both adults lied about how it happened.
Bad.
Dennis deleted video.
Serena encouraged him.
They left their injured daughter at the hospital long enough to return home, drink whiskey, and discuss evidence.
