Chapter 1 - The Watch on Tyler’s WristMajor Jake Mercer had imagined his homecoming a thousand times during eleven months overseas.

Emily would rush into his arms. Diane would cry. Tyler would pretend not to be emotional before gripping Jake’s shoulder and calling him an old man. The kitchen would smell like cinnamon, roasted chicken, and the coffee Emily always made too strong.

Instead, Jake entered his Charleston home and found silence.

Late-afternoon sunlight poured across the marble kitchen. Four untouched place settings stood on the island. Emily remained near the refrigerator, her hands pressed together so tightly that her knuckles had gone white.

Tyler leaned against the counter.

On his wrist was Jake’s limited-edition black-and-silver watch.

Only two hundred had been made. Jake’s father had given it to him after his first deployment, three months before the old man died.

Tyler noticed Jake staring and raised his arm proudly.

“Looks better on me anyway.”

Jake placed his military bag on the floor.

“That was locked in my study.”

Tyler’s smirk faltered.

Before he could answer, Diane hurried in wearing an elegant cream sweater and the warm maternal smile she reserved for strangers.

“Jake! You didn’t tell us you were arriving today.”

“My flight changed.”

Diane embraced him without warmth. Her perfume was stronger than he remembered, as though she had sprayed it seconds earlier to hide another smell.

Champagne.

Two glasses stood near the kitchen sink.

Emily did not move.

Jake looked at her face. She had lost weight. Dark circles shadowed her eyes. Her hair was tied back carelessly, unlike the neat style she always wore when expecting guests.

“Em?”

She forced a smile.

“Welcome home.”

He crossed the kitchen and reached for her.

Emily flinched.

Not subtly.

Her entire body recoiled before she caught herself.

Jake stopped.

Diane stepped between them.

“Emily had a rough time while you were gone.”

Tyler’s smile returned.

Jake looked from his mother to his brother.

“What kind of rough time?”

“Loneliness,” Diane answered. “Bills. The house. You know how emotional she gets.”

Emily lowered her gaze.

Jake had been home less than two minutes, and three details were already wrong.

His watch.

His wife’s fear.

And Diane speaking for her.

He said nothing more until night.

Diane and Tyler moved to the backyard pool with champagne, claiming they wanted to give the couple privacy. Jake watched from the bedroom window as they laughed beside the glowing water.

They looked less like relatives celebrating his return than owners celebrating a successful purchase.

Emily sat on the edge of the bed.

Jake reached for her hand.

She jerked away again.

This time, terror filled her eyes.

“Emily,” he said quietly. “Is there someone else?”

Her face collapsed.

“No.”

“Then why are you afraid of me?”

She pressed both hands against her mouth.

Jake opened the drawer where they kept passports and emergency cash. It was empty except for a second smartphone hidden beneath the lining.

The phone did not belong to him.

He powered it on.

Bank transfers filled the screen.

Payments from Jake and Emily’s joint account had been sent to companies controlled by Tyler. Property documents showed the Charleston house transferred into something called the Mercer Heritage Trust.

The signatures looked like Jake’s.

He had never signed them.

One photograph showed Emily at the dining table with papers in front of her. Diane stood behind her. Tyler’s hand gripped Emily’s shoulder.

Jake turned slowly.

“Who gave you this phone?”

Emily began shaking.

He knelt, lifted the edge of the blanket, and saw bruises around her ribs. Purple fingerprints marked both arms.

His training told him to remain calm.

His heart told him to break every door in the house.

Emily fell into him.

“It was your mom,” she whispered. “And Tyler.”

Outside, Diane raised her champagne glass.

Tyler laughed, wearing Jake’s father’s watch beneath the pool lights.

Jake kissed Emily’s forehead and stared through the window.
