Chapter 23 - THE BROTHER WHO KEPT THE SECOND MEMORY STRIPTyler surrendered the rest of the watch evidence.
He had not discovered only one hidden memory strip.
He found three.
The first contained Robert’s revocations.
The second contained the pool recording.
The third contained Tidal Ridge payments, Diane’s messages, and Whitmore’s promise to make Tyler sole heir.
Tyler kept the third strip because he believed it protected him from Diane.
He watched Emily being monitored.
Saw Diane tamper with medication.
Saw Whitmore enter false casualty data.
Saw Elmer approve the property transfer.
He still wore the watch.
Still demanded Emily sign.
Still pushed her into the kitchen island.
“Why didn’t you help her?” the prosecutor asked.
Tyler sat beside his attorney with treatment staff behind him.
“Because helping her would have ended the plan.”
“When did you understand the plan could kill Jake or Emily?”
“When Whitmore planted the gun.”
“Did you withdraw?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“I moved the gun into Jake’s bag.”
The answer removed any attempt to blame Diane for every action.
Tyler pleaded guilty to aggravated domestic assault, coercion, financial fraud, unlawful surveillance, evidence planting, obstruction, and conspiracy to falsify property documents.
He contested attempted murder. The evidence showed he participated in preparations that created danger, but prosecutors could not prove he intended Jake or Emily to die.
The court accepted the plea after Emily approved no special agreement on her behalf. She requested that her medical and bedroom recordings remain sealed.
Tyler’s cooperation reduced the sentence.
His violence and repeated opportunities to stop increased it.
He received a substantial prison term combined with mandatory addiction treatment and financial restitution.
Robert’s five-million-dollar rehabilitation trust could pay for independently approved treatment but not legal defense, restitution, or luxury housing.
Tyler called the conditions humiliating.
His counselor answered:
“Treatment is not inheritance you control.”
Before sentencing, Tyler asked to speak directly to Emily.
She declined.
He submitted a written statement.
The first draft described Diane’s manipulation.
Emily returned it unread after the advocate summarized the opening.
The second began:
I hurt you because I believed property I wanted mattered more than your refusal.
Emily read that one.
She did not respond.
Jake attended Tyler’s sentencing but submitted no request for leniency.
Tyler looked toward his empty wrist.
“Do you still have Dad’s watch?”
“It is evidence.”
“Afterward?”
“It was given to me.”
“I know.”
The words came without challenge for the first time.
Tyler later met Whitmore under supervised conditions.
Whitmore tried to discuss appeals, Mercer Coastal, and inherited rights.
Tyler asked whether Whitmore remembered his first day of school.
Whitmore did not know the year.
Tyler ended the visit.
Robert had been flawed, secretive, and compromised. He had still raised Tyler through illnesses, school failures, and addiction. Biology could not make Whitmore the father Tyler had imagined missing.
Years later, after completing treatment and part of his sentence, Tyler became eligible for parole.
Emily submitted no opposition beyond the factual record.
She also submitted no support.
The board denied release initially because Tyler continued describing the assault as something Diane made him do.
Two years later, he answered differently.
The board approved a tightly supervised transition.
He worked in a warehouse, controlled no investments, and wore an inexpensive digital watch purchased with his own wages.
Palmetto Recovery’s ledger identified dozens of debtors whose relatives had been threatened through property and insurance schemes.
One entry carried Elmer’s current location.
The Charleston mansion.

He had returned to the first house because everyone believed it remained under federal control.
👉 Tyler accepted that the hand which bruised Emily had been his, while Elmer slipped back into the mansion to recover the network charter hidden beneath Robert’s pool.
