Chapter 13 - Robert’s Hidden DaughterHer name was Anna Mercer.

According to Catherine, Robert had been twenty-two when his first girlfriend, Marjorie Lane, became pregnant. Diane worked at the private clinic where Marjorie delivered.
Robert was told the baby died from complications.
Marjorie disappeared shortly afterward.
Years later, Diane met Robert socially, married him, and never mentioned her connection to the clinic.
“She targeted him from the beginning,” Catherine said.
Diane shouted through Whitmore’s feed.
“That is a lie.”
Whitmore laughed.
“Tell them about the adoption ledger.”
Diane looked toward Tyler.
The clinic sold confidential adoption placements to wealthy families and altered birth records. Diane discovered Robert’s daughter survived and used the information to enter his life.
She believed control of the child gave her permanent leverage.
“What happened to Anna?” Emily asked.
Diane refused to answer.
Whitmore displayed a photograph.
A woman in her early forties stood outside a South Carolina courthouse. She had Robert’s eyes and Jake’s familiar stubborn expression.
Jake recognized her.
Attorney Rachel Sloan.
Rachel, the person who had protected him throughout the investigation, was Robert Mercer’s biological daughter.
The locked naval ward became silent.
Rachel appeared on the exterior camera, arguing with Bell after losing contact with Jake and Emily.
She did not know.
Or she had hidden it perfectly.
Catherine examined the photograph.
“Her original name was Anna Lane.”
Whitmore’s speaker clicked.
“Robert discovered her identity shortly before he died. He recruited her to protect Jake without telling either of them why.”
Jake remembered Rachel’s unusual loyalty.
She handled his emergency will.
She monitored Mercer Coastal filings.
She appeared whenever family money became dangerous.
Perhaps Robert had placed her close.
Rachel entered the hospital after Bell forced the maintenance doors.
She reached the maternity ward with federal agents behind her.
Jake showed her the photograph.
She stared at it.
“My birth name was Anna Lane.”
“Did you know Robert was your father?”
“No.”
Catherine handed her the clinic record.
Rachel read the pages without expression until her hands began trembling.
Robert had paid for her law school anonymously. He later hired her firm through shell retainers. He never approached her as a father.
He died before revealing the truth.
Diane watched through the feed.
“Robert chose strangers over his family.”
Rachel looked toward the screen.
“You stole his child and then married him.”
“I saved her from a clinic that would have sold her.”
“You left me there.”
Diane insisted she arranged a legitimate adoption after discovering the illegal scheme. She kept the truth secret because exposing it would implicate her.
Again, a partial rescue concealed a deeper betrayal.
Whitmore’s objective became clearer.
Rachel’s biological status made her the direct Mercer heir. The trustee reset transferring control to Emily could be challenged immediately.
If Whitmore controlled Rachel’s identity records, he could pressure her into signing over Mercer Coastal.
He had not been pursuing Jake as a son.
He had been using him as bait to reveal Robert’s heir.
Federal agents traced Whitmore’s speaker transmission.
It originated inside the hospital.
A wall in the former nursery opened.
Whitmore emerged holding the casualty envelope and a pistol angled toward the floor.
Agents surrounded him.
No shots were fired.
He placed the envelope on a bassinet.
“You think arresting me ends this?”
Bell ordered him to surrender.
Whitmore smiled at Rachel.
“Open the envelope.”
She did.
Inside was Robert’s final military ledger and a notarized acknowledgment naming Anna Lane as his daughter.
A second document appointed Colonel Grant Whitmore protector of her inherited shares if Robert died under suspicious circumstances.
Robert had given Whitmore legal authority over Rachel.
Catherine stared at the signature.
“Robert revoked that.”
“Where is the revocation?” Whitmore asked.
The original had been inside the stolen metal case.
It was missing.
Tyler had given it to Whitmore during the escape.

Rachel’s inheritance—and control of the Mercer network—could now fall under the authority of the man who helped conceal Robert’s death.
👉 Rachel learned she was Robert’s hidden daughter, but the surviving documents appeared to place her entire inheritance under Whitmore’s control.
