The credential was alive.
Military databases showed it had accessed restricted shipyard plans, casualty systems, and Mercer Coastal contracts for three decades after Daniel’s reported accident.
Daniel had become a reusable identity inside Harbormaster.
Jake entered the naval archive with Bell and Rachel. He did not approach the search as an heir hunting a secret father. He approached it as an officer whose biological identity had been turned into operational access.
Daniel Price had been a naval engineer assigned to inspect equipment supplied through Whitmore’s contract network. He documented defective emergency doors and falsified material certifications.
Days before he planned to testify, a pressure chamber exploded.
The official report called his death an industrial accident.
The recovered maintenance log showed Whitmore ordered the chamber tested while Daniel remained inside.
Robert learned what happened through Laura, Jake’s mother. Laura feared Jake would be targeted if Daniel’s paternity became public. Robert married her later and adopted Jake legally.
Robert did not steal Jake.
He chose to become his father after another man was killed.
The finding did not make Robert innocent of his own contracts.
It corrected one part of Jake’s history.
Harbormaster preserved Daniel’s credentials because a dead inspector could authorize hidden transfers without appearing for review. Elmer later attached the identity to ships, accounts, and protected witnesses.
The credential at Fort Sumter had been carried by a man captured on an exterior camera.
Dr. Samuel Kline.
Kline had escaped the Vermont house through the tunnel after pretending to remain unconscious. Elmer left him at the fort to direct investigators toward Daniel’s record while taking the original network files elsewhere.
Agents found Kline inside a decommissioned shipyard clinic that evening.
He was attempting to destroy refrigerated tissue samples.
Among them were Robert’s preserved pathology slides and Daniel Price’s remains.
Kline surrendered when Bell cut power to the incinerator.
“What did Elmer promise you?” Jake asked through the observation glass.
“A new identity.”
“You already declared enough people dead to build one.”
Kline looked away.
Independent DNA testing confirmed Daniel Price was Jake’s biological father.
It also confirmed Robert was not Tyler’s biological father.
Whitmore’s paternity required a separate sample. He refused voluntarily, but investigators obtained one from a drinking glass preserved after the naval-hospital confrontation.
The result established that Whitmore was Tyler’s biological father.
Tyler received the information inside the independent treatment facility.
He stared at the report.
“Did he ever ask about me?”
Jake answered carefully.
“He paid your companies through intermediaries. He manipulated the trust for you. That is not the same as raising you.”
“Robert knew?”
“His files suggest he suspected.”
“And still created the rehabilitation trust?”
“Yes.”
Tyler began crying.
For years, Diane had told him Robert’s conditions proved rejection. The trust now looked like the final act of a flawed father who understood Tyler’s addiction and refused to finance it further.
Tyler asked to see Whitmore.
His advocate recommended waiting.
Tyler agreed.
Changing his answer from immediate confrontation to delay was the first major choice he made without Diane, debt collectors, or resentment directing him.
Kline’s seized files contained the names of forty-one service members whose casualty status had been altered.
Some were dead.
Some were witnesses living under controlled identities.
Nine were still alive inside military-contracted rehabilitation facilities.
One name stopped Rachel.

Her biological mother had not disappeared voluntarily after giving birth.
