Chapter 17 - THE FINAL SYRINGE BESIDE THE POOLDiane remained under guard in the hospital.
The chemical exposure damaged her lungs but did not prevent her from speaking. Rachel, Ruiz, and an independent homicide investigator conducted the interview.
Jake watched through a secure connection.
Emily chose not to attend.
Diane had spent eleven months controlling her home, monitoring her movements, and allowing Tyler to hurt her. Emily did not owe Diane another audience simply because the woman now possessed useful information.
“Who prepared Kline’s second syringe?” Rachel asked.
“Grant Whitmore.”
“The colonel was not a physician.”
“He did not need to be. Kline told him which vial to use.”
Diane described Robert’s final evening.
She had replaced his usual heart medication with pills Kline supplied. Elmer said the dose would cause weakness and confusion, allowing them to force Robert’s signature onto a reinstatement of Whitmore’s authority.
Diane knew the pills were dangerous.
She claimed she did not expect death.
“When Robert collapsed, why didn’t you call an ambulance?” Rachel asked.
“Elmer threatened Tyler.”
“Tyler was an adult.”
“He owed Palmetto Recovery more than six million dollars. Elmer said they would find him before morning.”
“You chose your son over your husband’s emergency treatment.”
“Yes.”
Diane’s answer contained no defense large enough to cover the pool deck.
Catherine arrived after Robert secretly contacted her. The reversal injection briefly stabilized him.
Kline then sedated Catherine.
Whitmore prepared the second syringe and handed it to Kline. The drug was not automatically fatal, but Robert’s altered medication had already destabilized his heart. Kline knew combining them created grave risk.
Robert remained alive for approximately seven minutes afterward.
Whitmore blocked the patio door.
Elmer ordered everyone to wait until the reinstatement document was uploaded.
The official death time was moved beyond midnight so Robert appeared legally alive when the paper entered the trust system.
No single hand had completed every step.
Diane changed the pills.
Catherine attempted to reverse them.
Kline administered the final drug.
Whitmore prevented rescue.
Elmer directed the operation.
Robert’s death was not a mysterious family tragedy.
It was a conspiracy built from participants who each insisted their part was not the fatal one.
Diane identified another person.
Martin Hale, the suspended notary, had waited inside the pool house. He verified the posthumous signature and transmitted it to the trust.
Federal agents arrested him at a motel outside Savannah. He surrendered a ledger of fraudulent property transfers involving military families whose spouses had been declared missing or unstable.
The case expanded immediately.
Diane asked for protection.
“Elmer will try again.”
Rachel answered, “Protection does not require immunity.”
Diane wanted Tyler moved to a secure treatment facility. Investigators agreed only after Tyler consented and after the facility was placed outside every Mercer, Whitmore, and Harbormaster financial connection.
Diane then requested to see Jake.
He entered alone.
She looked smaller beneath the oxygen line.
“I raised you.”
“You also planted a weapon in my military bag.”
“Tyler did that.”
“You watched.”
“I was trying to keep both my sons alive.”
Jake studied her.
“Was Tyler Robert’s son?”
Diane turned toward the window.
“No.”
“Whose?”
Her silence lasted long enough to answer.
“Grant Whitmore’s.”
Jake felt no triumph.
Tyler had spent his life believing Jake stole their father’s love. Robert had known Tyler was not biologically his and still raised him. Whitmore had remained nearby, manipulating the family while refusing to claim his own son openly.
“Did Tyler know?”
“Not until the night you returned.”
“What did Whitmore promise him?”
“Control of Mercer Coastal after you and Emily were removed.”
Diane reached toward Jake.
He stepped back.
“You can tell the truth without touching me.”
She lowered her hand.
At Fort Sumter, investigators found Elmer’s abandoned boat. Blood marked the deck, but DNA did not belong to him.
A military identification card lay beneath the wheel.
It belonged to Daniel Price.
Jake’s biological father.
Daniel had supposedly died in a shipyard accident more than thirty years earlier.
