Chapter 16 - THE BOAT HORN BEFORE DAWNCatherine agreed to go to Charleston Harbor.
She did not agree to go as Elmer’s prisoner.
Daniel Ruiz secured a federal warrant covering the harbor warehouse, Elmer’s communications, Robert’s homicide evidence, and the covert financial network known as Harbormaster. Captain Aaron Bell assigned military investigators outside Colonel Whitmore’s chain of command.
Jake was ordered to remain behind the tactical line.
Emily received the same instruction.
Neither objected.
Elmer had shaped too many confrontations by convincing relatives that love required them to run into danger personally.
Before Catherine entered the warehouse, Rachel attached a transmitter to her coat. Catherine looked at the device.
“Robert hid cameras in watches. Elmer hid microphones in homes. Everyone calls surveillance protection when they control it.”
Rachel held out a consent form.
“This one is your choice.”
Catherine read every line and signed.
Inside the warehouse, a single lamp burned above a metal table. Robert’s missing military ledger lay beside a portable screen.
Elmer appeared through a speaker rather than in person.
“You came alone?”
“No.”
“You always were a poor liar.”
“I learned from the man who raised my daughter.”
The screen activated.
The complete pool recording began where the earlier file had stopped.
Catherine approached Robert with a syringe.
Robert was conscious but struggling to breathe.
“What did Diane give you?” Catherine asked.
“My evening medication was different.”
Catherine injected him.
Within seconds, Robert’s breathing improved.
The syringe had contained an emergency reversal drug prepared after Catherine discovered Dr. Kline had supplied Diane with altered pills.
She had not delivered the fatal dose.
She had interrupted it.
Then Whitmore entered the frame and took Robert’s phone. Diane stood near the pool, crying. Elmer remained beyond the patio lights.
Robert tried to stand.
“Call an ambulance.”
Whitmore answered, “Not until you sign.”
Dr. Kline appeared with a second syringe.
Catherine moved between them.
Elmer’s voice said, “Emily is still with you, Catherine. Think carefully.”
Catherine froze.
Kline injected her first.
The video blurred as she collapsed beside the lounge chairs.
Robert attempted to reach her. Whitmore restrained him while Kline administered another drug.
Robert stopped moving minutes later.
Elmer had not erased Catherine’s memory to hide her murder.
He erased it to hide her attempted rescue.
The screen went dark.
“You spent five years believing you might have killed him,” Emily said through the monitored channel.
Catherine looked toward the ceiling.
“That was the point.”
Elmer’s voice returned.
“Give me Robert’s trust key, and I release the original ledger.”
“You no longer know where the key is.”
“I know Emily has it.”
Emily did not.
The supposed key was another lie intended to bring her into the warehouse.
Ruiz’s team traced Elmer’s signal to a yacht moving through the outer harbor. Coast Guard vessels closed around it.
Elmer triggered the warehouse fire system.
Foam and chemical smoke filled the room. Catherine dropped to the floor as emergency doors locked.
Jake took one step toward the tactical boundary.
Bell blocked him.
“Let the rescue team work.”
For Jake, obedience felt unbearable.
It was still the right choice.
Firefighters entered through the loading bay and brought Catherine out conscious. She had inhaled smoke but suffered no serious injury.
The Coast Guard boarded the yacht.
They found Whitmore’s casualty files, forged death certificates, and three frightened accountants.
Elmer was not aboard.
He had transferred to a smaller vessel minutes earlier.
Inside the yacht’s navigation system, investigators recovered his destination.
Fort Sumter.
Before teams could move, Jake received a call from the mansion.
Diane had been found alive inside the pool-equipment corridor. Someone had locked her beside a leaking chemical line during the blackout.
She had one message for Jake.
