Chapter 2 - The Phone Beneath the DrawerJake locked the bedroom door.

It was the first time he had ever done so inside his own home.
Emily sat against the headboard while he examined the hidden phone. Every instinct demanded that he confront Tyler immediately, but Jake had spent fourteen years learning that anger without intelligence gave the enemy time to escape.
He turned off the bedroom lights and pulled the curtains halfway closed.
“Tell me everything.”
Emily looked toward the door.
“They listen.”
“How?”
“I don’t know. Diane always knew when I called someone or tried to leave.”
Jake searched the nightstand, lamp, smoke detector, and electrical outlets. Beneath the bedside table, he found a small transmitter connected to the charging port.
He placed it inside a metal travel case to block the signal.
Emily began with the week after his deployment.
Diane arrived with two suitcases and claimed the plumbing in her condo had flooded. Tyler followed two days later, saying he had lost his apartment after an investment collapsed.
“They said it would be temporary,” Emily said.
Jake looked toward the pool.
“Tyler’s investment?”
“He owes money to someone. A lot of money.”
Diane began controlling the household within days. She opened Jake’s mail, questioned every purchase Emily made, and demanded access to the bank accounts because “family should not hide things.”
When Emily refused, Tyler smashed her phone.
Then came the documents.
A notary named Martin Hale visited the house late one night. Diane told Emily the papers protected the property if Jake died overseas.
Emily refused to sign.
Tyler gripped her arm until she could no longer hold the pen steadily.
“He told me accidents happen to military wives living alone.”
Jake’s jaw tightened.
“Did he hit you?”
“The first time was when I tried to call the bank.”
She touched her ribs.
“He pushed me into the kitchen island. Diane watched.”
“And said what?”
“That families forgive each other.”
The hidden phone belonged to Tyler. Emily found it beneath the pool-house sofa after he passed out drunk. She photographed every document she could find and copied messages from his banking application.
She could not escape because Diane had taken her car keys, credit cards, and passport.
“Why didn’t you call the police from a neighbor’s house?”
Emily looked ashamed.
“They showed me a military notification.”
Jake stared.
“It said your convoy had been attacked. That you were missing and presumed dead.”
No such attack had occurred.
His unit had experienced communications restrictions for three weeks, but Jake had continued sending messages through approved channels.
Emily never received them.
Diane had intercepted his letters and blocked every military number on the house phone.
“They told me if I caused trouble before your death was confirmed, the Army would freeze everything and I would lose the house.”
Jake took her hand carefully.
“You believed them because they isolated you.”
“They also had recordings.”
“Of what?”
“Me crying. Screaming when Tyler cornered me. Diane said they would tell everyone I had become unstable.”
The forged property documents listed Tyler as successor trustee if Jake died and Emily became incapacitated.
The plan was suddenly clear.
They had prepared two paths.
If Jake died overseas, Tyler inherited control.
If Jake returned, they would portray Emily as unstable and claim she had signed everything voluntarily.
Jake scrolled through the phone’s messages.
One conversation stopped him.
DIANE: He returns Friday.
TYLER: Then we move her before Thursday.
DIANE: Too late. His flight changed.
TYLER: Keep him calm tonight. I’ll finish the pool papers.
Jake checked the timestamp.
The message had been sent twenty minutes before he entered the kitchen.
“What are the pool papers?” he asked.
Emily began crying again.
“They made me increase your life-insurance policy.”
Jake looked through the bedroom window.
Tyler stood at the edge of the pool, staring toward the darkened room.
Then he lifted Jake’s watch and pressed something along the side.
A tiny green light flashed.
The watch had been altered.
Jake’s father’s final gift was no longer merely stolen.

It had become part of the surveillance system.
👉 Diane and Tyler had isolated Emily using a forged military death notice, while Jake’s stolen watch appeared to be transmitting from inside the house.
