Chapter 12 - The Woman in the Naval HospitalJake did not intend to follow Whitmore’s instructions alone.

Bell organized a discreet military-investigation team. Ruiz coordinated federal agents outside the old naval hospital. Rachel remained with Emily in a surveillance vehicle.

The facility had closed twelve years earlier. Storm shutters covered the windows. Salt air corroded the railings. Only one corridor showed electrical power.

Jake entered wearing civilian clothes and a concealed transmitter.

He found Catherine inside a former maternity ward.

She was sixty-one, thin, and visibly exhausted. A healing cut crossed her forehead.

Emily entered behind him despite Rachel’s objections.

For several seconds, mother and daughter only stared at each other.

Then Emily crossed the room.

Catherine held her.

“I tried to reach you.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I believed disappearing would keep Whitmore from using you.”

“It made me easier for Diane to isolate.”

Catherine closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer did not repair anything.

It simply refused to hide.

Catherine explained that Whitmore began manipulating military housing contracts twenty-five years earlier. Robert discovered the payments but joined the scheme temporarily to save Mercer Coastal from bankruptcy.

Catherine created hidden ledgers.

When she threatened exposure, Whitmore arranged the Cooper River disappearance and forced her into a protected identity he controlled.

She escaped six months earlier after learning Diane and Tyler were targeting Emily.

“Who is Jake’s father?” Emily asked.

Catherine looked toward him.

“Robert adopted you legally. Your biological father was a naval engineer named Daniel Price.”

Jake had never heard the name.

“Why erase him?”

“Daniel uncovered defective equipment inside Whitmore’s contract network. He died in what was called a shipyard accident.”

Whitmore wanted Jake to believe he was his son because paternity gave him emotional leverage and a possible claim against Robert’s trust.

Laura’s note was genuine.

Grant knew Jake was not his.

He simply expected grief and confusion to make the lie useful.

Catherine opened a hospital cabinet.

Original birth records, adoption papers, and DNA reports lay inside.

Before Jake could examine them, the corridor lights went out.

Whitmore’s voice came through the ceiling speaker.

“You always did enjoy rewriting men’s lives, Catherine.”

Doors locked.

Agents outside lost the signal.

Catherine moved toward a maintenance panel.

“He has control of the old military network.”

Whitmore activated a screen.

Video showed Diane inside the Charleston mansion. Tyler stood beside her. Both were speaking to investigators.

Then another room appeared.

Dr. Kline sat restrained in a chair.

Whitmore held the missing casualty envelope.

“I forged Jake’s death notice because Diane gave me Robert’s military ledger,” Whitmore said. “She failed to deliver the complete archive.”

Diane shouted through the feed.

“You said you would protect Tyler.”

“I protected my investment.”

Tyler looked toward his mother.

“You promised him the ledgers?”

Diane answered with silence.

Whitmore wanted Catherine to enter the archive decryption key. Without it, Robert’s records could implicate everyone but would not identify the senior defense officials above Whitmore.

“Open the files,” he ordered.

Catherine refused.

Whitmore displayed a second live feed.

Emily’s hotel room.

Someone had entered while they were gone.

The bed had been overturned. The hidden phone’s backup drive was missing.

On the wall, written in black marker:

ROBERT’S LAST HEIR IS ALIVE.

Catherine stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“What does it mean?” Jake asked.

“Robert had another child.”

Emily stepped backward.

“You?”

“No.”

Catherine looked toward Diane’s image.

“Before Robert married either of us, he had a daughter. Diane told him the baby died.”

Diane’s face changed on the screen.

The child had survived.
