Chapter 3 - The Soldier Who Pretended Not to KnowJake opened the curtains.

He waved casually toward the pool.
Tyler lowered his wrist.
Jake forced a tired smile, then poured himself a glass of water and returned to Emily.
“They think I haven’t figured it out.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Let them keep thinking that.”
He removed his uniform jacket, placed it over the hidden phone, and used his military-issued handset to contact the one person Diane did not know he trusted.
Captain Rachel Sloan had served with Jake during two deployments before leaving the Army to become a federal financial-crimes attorney.
She answered on the second ring.
“You’re home early.”
“I need an off-record property search.”
Jake photographed the forged deed and sent it through an encrypted channel.
Rachel studied it.
“This transfer was recorded seven weeks ago.”
“I was overseas.”
“Your signature was notarized in Charleston.”
“By Martin Hale?”
“Yes.”
Jake heard typing.
“Hale’s commission was suspended last year after three fraud complaints.”
“Can the transfer be reversed?”
“Eventually. Right now, whoever controls the trust can borrow against the house.”
Rachel searched further.
“They already did.”
A three-million-dollar credit line had been opened using the mansion as collateral. Most of the money went to a private investment company called Tidal Ridge Capital.
Tyler owned it.
Another payment went to Palmetto Recovery Services.
Rachel recognized the name.
“It isn’t a recovery business. It’s a private debt-enforcement company.”
Tyler had borrowed from criminals, used Jake’s house as collateral, and paid part of his debt using forged documents.
“Do not confront them yet,” Rachel warned. “If the original deed disappears, proving fraud gets harder.”
“I have photographs.”
“You need the notary log, the source files, and a clean recording of them admitting coercion.”
Jake looked toward Emily.
“I can get that.”
The bedroom door shook beneath a hard knock.
“Jake?” Diane called sweetly. “We made a toast for you.”
He disconnected and hid the phone.
Emily pulled the blanket over her bruises.
Jake opened the door.
Diane stood beside Tyler. His brother had removed the stolen watch.
“Couldn’t sleep?” Tyler asked.
“I’ve slept in worse places.”
Diane studied Jake’s face.
“Is Emily upsetting you?”
Jake glanced back at his wife.
“She told me she fell down the stairs.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
He gave her the smallest possible nod.
Diane relaxed.
“She’s been clumsy lately.”
Tyler stepped into the room without permission.
“You should let Mom manage the finances until you settle back in.”
Jake shrugged.
“Probably smart.”
Emily stared at him as though he had become another stranger.
Tyler smiled.
“See? Jake gets it.”
Jake walked downstairs with them.
By the pool, Diane poured champagne into three glasses. The fourth remained empty.
“To family,” she said.
Jake lifted the glass but did not drink.
Tyler wore the watch again.
“Dad would’ve wanted me to have this.”
“Our father gave it to me.”
“You were always his favorite.”
The resentment beneath Tyler’s words was old and poisonous.
Jake leaned back.
“What happened while I was gone?”
Tyler exchanged a glance with Diane.
“Emily started moving money,” he said. “She became paranoid. Accused us of stealing.”
“Did she?”
“We protected your property.”
Jake nodded as though relieved.
“I’m glad you were here.”
Diane’s shoulders lowered.
She believed him.
Then Tyler made the mistake Jake was waiting for.
“Once you sign the confirmation tomorrow, everything becomes permanent.”
“What confirmation?”
“The deed transfer. Just paperwork.”
Jake smiled.
“Bring it to breakfast.”
Inside the mansion, Emily watched through the bedroom window.
She did not understand his performance yet.
Neither did Tyler.
But Diane did.
Her smile vanished for one brief second.
Later, Jake returned upstairs and found Emily standing near the door with her suitcase open.
“You believed them,” she whispered.
“No.”
“You told them I fell.”
“I told them what they needed to hear.”
Jake opened his hand.
Inside was the clasp from the stolen watch.
He had removed it while embracing Tyler beside the pool.
A memory card was hidden beneath the metal.
Emily stared.
Jake inserted it into the secret phone.
Video files appeared.
Weeks of footage from inside their bedroom.
One recording showed Diane searching Emily’s medication.
Another showed Tyler placing forged documents beneath Jake’s side of the mattress.
The newest file had been created that afternoon.
Diane stood beside the pool speaking to someone on the phone.
