Chapter 10 - The Name on the Blood VialThe hidden archive doors sealed behind them.

Jake, Emily, Diane, and Tyler stood beneath harsh white lights while federal agents worked to override the lock from outside.
Diane guarded the medical cooler.
Emily looked at the label again.
CATHERINE MERCER.
“My mother’s name was Hayes.”
“After she left Robert,” Diane said.
Jake stared at his mother.
“Were they married?”
“For eleven months.”
The answer changed the room.
Robert married Catherine before meeting Diane. The marriage had been erased from public records after Catherine entered a classified financial investigation.
Emily was born during that marriage.
Robert Mercer was her father.
Jake’s chest tightened.
“That would make Emily my sister.”
“No,” Diane said. “Robert was listed on the certificate. He was not her biological father.”
Emily stepped closer.
“Then who was?”
Diane’s eyes moved toward the ceiling camera.
She knew investigators were listening.
“I don’t know.”
“You know enough to build a trust around me.”
“Robert believed Catherine’s child would inherit evidence he could no longer safely hold.”
Emily was not placed in the trust only because of family ties.
She was used as a living control mechanism.
The blood samples had been collected after Robert began suspecting that someone inside the family had altered paternity and inheritance records.
Rachel’s voice came through Jake’s concealed earpiece.
“Do not touch the cooler. We need chain of custody.”
Tyler leaned against a cabinet.
“Mom told me Emily was some accountant’s daughter who tricked Dad.”
Diane snapped, “Because you could not keep a secret.”
“You used me to hurt her.”
“You were already angry.”
“You said Jake stole everything from me.”
“He did.”
Jake looked at Tyler.
“What did I steal?”
“Our father.”
Jake almost answered defensively.
Then he remembered Robert’s records, hidden marriages, secret trusts, and compromised contracts.
Perhaps neither brother had truly possessed the father they fought over.
Emily opened a ledger.
Robert had paid for her education through a shell scholarship. He monitored her medical care, housing, and employment from a distance.
He knew exactly where she was when Diane arranged the fundraising dinner.
Robert may have helped create Jake and Emily’s meeting.
The ledger included a note:
If Jake chooses Emily freely, transfer protection to both.
Robert had turned their relationship into another test.
Emily’s voice shook.
“Everyone decided what our marriage meant before we did.”
Jake took her hand.
“What it means now is ours.”
Diane laughed.
“You still think love survives paperwork?”
Jake looked at Emily’s bruises.
“It survived you.”
The archive lock released.
Federal agents entered.
Diane immediately dropped the cooler and began shouting that Jake had threatened her. Tyler backed away from the ledgers.
Ruiz preserved the room.
No final arrests occurred. The evidence required forensic review, and Diane’s attorney was already challenging the entry.
A technician scanned the blood samples.
Robert’s vial had degraded.
Tyler’s matched Diane as his biological mother.
Jake’s sample produced a strange result.
It did not match Diane.
Jake had always known Diane was his stepmother, though she raised him from age five.
The unexpected result concerned Robert.
Jake’s DNA did not match him either.
Diane watched the technician’s face.
“You finally understand,” she said.
Jake turned.
“Understand what?”
“Robert was never your father.”
Tyler stared at Jake with open shock.
Diane continued.
“Your mother brought you into the marriage. Robert adopted you privately and destroyed the original records.”
Jake felt the floor shift beneath him.
The Mercer bloodline trust required a direct biological descendant.
If Diane was telling the truth, Jake had never been eligible.
Tyler was Robert’s only recognized biological son.
Emily’s unknown paternity became the deciding question.
If Robert was not her biological father, the trust might belong entirely to Tyler.
A secure printer activated by itself.
One page emerged.
EMERGENCY BENEFICIARY DETERMINATION REQUESTED.
The requesting physician was Dr. Samuel Kline.
The test location was a military medical laboratory controlled by Colonel Whitmore.
They had already submitted DNA evidence.

And according to the preliminary result, Tyler was not Robert’s biological son either.
👉 The blood archive shattered both brothers’ identities, while a military laboratory claimed that neither Jake nor Tyler belonged to Robert Mercer’s bloodline.
