Chapter 5 - The Case Behind the WallTyler reached the study as Jake lifted the metal case.

“Put that down.”

Jake turned.

His brother stood in the doorway holding a fireplace poker.

Diane remained behind him.

Emily had followed from the kitchen but stopped near the staircase.

Jake placed the case on the desk.

“You hid my mail.”

Diane folded her arms.

“You were distracted enough.”

“You told Emily I was dead.”

“We told her what the official notice said.”

“You arranged the notice.”

Diane looked toward Tyler.

He raised the poker.

Jake spoke calmly.

“If you swing that, three cameras record you.”

Tyler looked around instinctively.

There were no visible cameras.

That hesitation gave Emily time to move back into the hall and lock herself inside the bedroom with the military phone.

Jake continued.

“Rachel has copies of everything.”

Diane’s confidence flickered.

“You think an old Army friend can destroy this family?”

“I think federal fraud charges can.”

Tyler stepped closer.

“The house was supposed to be mine.”

“It never belonged to you.”

“Dad promised.”

“Our father gave you three companies. You bankrupted two and sold the third.”

“He gave you his respect.”

The words came out like a wound.

Jake understood then that Tyler had not stolen the watch because of its value. He wore it because it represented the approval he believed Jake had taken from him.

Diane had fed that resentment until it became useful.

Jake opened the case using the four-digit code from his father’s birth year.

Inside were original insurance policies, property deeds, military documents, and a handwritten letter from Jake’s father.

The letter had never been delivered.

Jake, if Diane asks you to place the Charleston house into a family trust, refuse. The property is not mine to give.

Jake read further.

The mansion had belonged to Jake’s grandmother, Eleanor Mercer. Her estate placed it into a protected holding company for the benefit of Jake’s future children.

Jake and Emily had no children yet.

Until that happened, neither Diane nor Tyler could sell or borrow against it.

Any forged transfer would trigger an automatic ownership review.

Diane had been trying to force Jake’s confirmation before the review deadline expired.

Midnight tomorrow.

The metal case also contained an original power-of-attorney revocation signed by Jake’s father days before his death.

It removed Diane from all family financial decisions.

“Why was this hidden?” Jake asked.

Diane’s face became pale.

“Your father was confused at the end.”

“He had three witnesses.”

“Paid employees.”

Tyler struck the desk with the poker.

“Stop talking like she’s the criminal!”

Jake looked at him.

“She watched you bruise Emily.”

Tyler’s jaw tightened.

“She wouldn’t sign.”

“You hurt my wife over paper.”

“She was stealing what Mom earned.”

Emily’s voice came from the hall.

“I earned nothing from them. I tried to protect Jake’s home.”

She stood holding the military phone, recording every word.

Diane lunged toward her.

Jake blocked the path.

“Stay away from her.”

Diane’s expression became vicious.

“You think she loves you? She was ready to sell the house and leave.”

Emily shook her head.

“That’s a lie.”

Diane opened the metal case and threw a photograph across the desk.

It showed Emily entering a Charleston law office with a suitcase three months earlier.

The office belonged to a divorce attorney.

Jake looked at Emily.

She stared at the photograph.

“I went there because your mother told me you had another family overseas.”

Diane smiled.

“I only showed her what your unit sent.”

“What did you show her?” Jake asked.

“A photograph.”

Emily opened the secret phone.

The image showed Jake standing beside a woman and two children at an overseas base.

The woman was a local interpreter.

The children were refugees evacuated after a bombing.

Someone had cropped the military insignia and changed the timestamp.

Diane had used a humanitarian photograph to convince Emily she was being abandoned.

Jake placed his father’s letter inside his jacket.

Then the hidden military phone rang.

Colonel Whitmore’s name appeared.

Jake answered on speaker.

“Major Mercer,” Whitmore said. “Report to base immediately. Your deployment status has been flagged for unauthorized departure.”

Jake looked at Diane.

Her smile returned.

Whitmore continued.

“Military police are already on their way.”

👉 The original documents could destroy Diane’s property scheme, but Colonel Whitmore had now labeled Jake’s lawful homecoming an unauthorized military departure.
