Chapter 6 - The Uniform at the DoorTwo dark vehicles stopped outside the mansion.

Jake watched through the study window as four military police officers approached the front entrance.

Diane moved instantly.

Her posture softened. Her eyes filled with rehearsed concern.

“Jake, please don’t make this harder.”

Tyler dropped the fireplace poker behind a chair.

Emily whispered, “They planned this.”

Jake handed her the metal case.

“Take it to the bedroom. Send every page to Rachel.”

“What about you?”

“I’m not resisting military police.”

The doorbell rang.

Diane opened it before Jake reached the foyer.

“Thank God,” she said. “He’s been threatening everyone.”

Jake entered wearing his uniform trousers and undershirt, his hands visible.

Captain Aaron Bell led the officers. Jake knew him by reputation but not personally.

“Major Mercer, Colonel Whitmore reports you departed your assigned transit location without authorization.”

“My leave was approved.”

“Your leave order was revoked yesterday.”

“I received no revocation.”

Diane touched Bell’s arm.

“He has been confused since arriving.”

Jake looked at her hand until she removed it.

Bell asked whether weapons were present.

“Secured in my military bag near the kitchen. I have not opened it.”

Tyler spoke from behind Diane.

“He attacked me in the study.”

Emily appeared at the top of the stairs.

“That is a lie.”

Bell looked up.

Her bruises were partly visible beneath her sleeve.

Diane moved quickly.

“She injures herself when upset.”

Jake’s control nearly broke.

Bell noticed.

“Major, keep your hands where I can see them.”

Jake obeyed.

“Captain, before you take anyone’s statement, verify the digital signature on my leave order with personnel command—not Colonel Whitmore.”

Bell hesitated.

Whitmore’s accusation carried authority, but Jake’s request was reasonable.

He radioed for verification.

One officer collected Jake’s military bag. The seal on the weapon compartment had been cut.

Inside was a pistol Jake did not recognize.

The serial number had been scratched away.

Tyler stared too hard at it.

Jake said, “That weapon was planted.”

Diane covered her mouth.

“Oh, Jake.”

Emily descended holding the hidden phone.

“I have recordings.”

Tyler moved toward her.

A military officer blocked him.

Bell listened to the audio of Tyler admitting he bruised Emily because she refused to sign. Then he watched the video from the altered watch showing Diane searching medication and hiding documents.

His posture changed.

“This is now a possible domestic-violence scene.”

Diane’s composure vanished.

“You came for him.”

“I came to verify an unauthorized-absence report.”

Bell’s radio crackled.

Personnel command confirmed Jake’s leave had been approved.

The revocation was entered twelve hours after Jake boarded his flight.

The user credential belonged to Colonel Whitmore.

Bell looked toward Jake.

“Sir, I need to report this outside Whitmore’s chain.”

Before he could finish, every light in the house went out.

The security system locked the doors.

Pool lights continued glowing through the rear windows.

Tyler ran.

Jake heard the patio door open.

By the time emergency lights activated, Tyler had crossed the backyard carrying the metal case Emily was supposed to protect.

“He took it!” she shouted.

Jake moved toward the pool.

Bell followed with two officers.

Tyler reached a black SUV parked beyond the rear gate. Diane remained inside the foyer, watching through the glass.

The SUV’s driver stepped out.

Colonel Whitmore.

He wore civilian clothes but carried himself with military authority.

“Get in,” he ordered Tyler.

Jake stopped beside the pool.

Whitmore looked across the water.

“You should have stayed overseas, Major.”

Bell raised his voice.

“Colonel, step away from the vehicle.”

Whitmore ignored him.

Tyler climbed inside with the case.

The SUV accelerated through the gate before the officers reached it.

Diane laughed quietly behind Jake.

“You have no idea what your father protected.”

Jake turned.

“What was in that case beyond the deed?”

Diane’s smile widened.

“Proof that your father did not die naturally.”

👉 Whitmore escaped with the original documents, while Diane revealed that Jake’s father’s death was connected to the same conspiracy.
