Chapter 1 - The Smell of an ApologyDaniel Bennett woke to rosemary, garlic, and slow-cooked beef drifting beneath the bedroom door.

He smiled before opening his eyes.
Claire had made his favorite short ribs.
To Daniel, that could mean only one thing: his wife had finally accepted that the previous night was her fault.
He stretched beneath the expensive linen sheets and touched the empty side of the bed. Claire had not slept beside him, but that did not concern him. She always needed time after an argument.
She always returned.
She always apologized first.
Daniel pulled on a charcoal T-shirt and dark lounge pants, then walked downstairs through the luxury Chicago home as warm morning sunlight spilled across the polished floors.
The dining room chandelier glowed above a carefully arranged breakfast table.
Claire stood beside it with her back partially turned.
Her long blonde hair rested over the shoulders of an elegant cream dress embroidered with pink flowers.
Daniel reached for the serving platter before greeting her. He tore off a large piece of meat, bit into it, and laughed.
“So you finally know you were wrong, huh?”
Claire slowly turned.
The dark bruise surrounding her left eye entered the light.
Daniel’s smile weakened.
Then he noticed the two uniformed police officers standing behind her.
Beside them was a dark-haired woman in a fitted black suit, holding a thick closed portfolio against her side.
Daniel froze mid-bite.
Claire looked directly at him.
“Sit down, Daniel. Your breakfast is getting cold.”
The investigator strode forward and slammed the closed portfolio onto the table.
Plates jumped.
Coffee rippled.
Silverware rattled against porcelain.
“We traced the hotel payments and every fake vendor.”
The meat slipped from Daniel’s hand and landed in his lap.
His chair scraped violently backward as he lunged toward the folder.
Both officers stepped between him and Claire.
“What did you do to me?” Daniel shouted.
Claire calmly lifted her coffee cup and took one slow sip.
“I invited the people you were certain would never compare notes.”
Then Daniel saw the silver seal embossed across the portfolio cover.
All the color left his face.
He had seen that seal only once before.
At the beginning of his marriage.

And he knew it never appeared unless the Bennett Family Accountability Office believed someone had stolen from the family.
👉 Daniel thought the bruise was the danger—but the seal told him Claire had discovered something capable of destroying far more than their marriage.
