Chapter 6 - Evidence Before EmotionThe nurse documented everything without making Claire feel like a spectacle.

The bruise around her eye.

Tenderness near her cheekbone.

A small scratch on her wrist.

Her torn sleeve.

The time she arrived.

The way she described the incident.

A physician completed the report and recommended observation for possible concussion symptoms.

Then Officer Grant arrived to take her statement.

He did not ask why she stayed with Daniel.

He did not ask whether she had provoked him.

He asked whether Daniel had access to weapons, accounts, passwords, and private documents.

Claire answered every question.

Evelyn joined them in a secure conference room at the clinic.

She carried the thick portfolio bearing the Bennett family seal.

“We need to decide how to approach him,” Evelyn said.

Claire looked at the folder.

“How much is inside?”

“Enough to establish the beginning of the fraud.”

“Not the end?”

“No.”

Several accounts remained hidden. The ownership of Monarch Holdings was still unclear. The forensic team had evidence of forged approvals but not yet the device used to create them.

Evelyn wanted Daniel frightened, not fully informed.

“Careful people confess through correction,” she explained. “If we show him everything, he will tailor his story. If we show him fragments, he may tell us what is missing.”

Officer Grant suggested a controlled return to the house.

Two officers would remain present.

Claire could retrieve property, secure access, and confront Daniel without being alone.

“What will make him enter the room relaxed?” Evelyn asked.

Claire almost laughed.

“Breakfast.”

She described Daniel’s favorite rosemary short ribs.

His habit of treating food as proof that conflict had ended.

His belief that a wife who cooked had accepted blame.

Evelyn nodded.

“Then we use the expectation he created.”

Claire returned to the house shortly before sunrise with police and the investigator.

Daniel was still asleep.

She changed into the cream floral dress he once said made her look harmless.

Then she entered the kitchen.

She seasoned the meat.

Set the table.

Poured coffee.

Officer Grant and Officer Price positioned themselves behind the dining-room entrance.

Evelyn stood beside them holding the closed portfolio.

Claire heard Daniel’s bedroom door open upstairs.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

The smell of rosemary had done exactly what she expected.

Daniel was walking willingly into the room where every lie would begin losing its privacy.

👉 Claire prepared Daniel’s favorite meal not as forgiveness, but as the first controlled test of how guilty he truly was.
