Chapter 2 - The Seal He RecognizedThe Bennett Family Accountability Office existed because Claire’s father had trusted systems more than promises.

Before his death, Charles Bennett had built an independent team of investigators, attorneys, forensic accountants, and compliance experts who answered only to the controlling shareholder of Bennett Systems.
That shareholder was Claire.
Daniel had mocked the office when he first learned about it.
He called it a private police force for rich people.
Charles had corrected him without smiling.
“It exists because money gives dishonest people opportunities they could never earn.”
Daniel remembered the warning now.
The investigator placed one hand over the portfolio clasp.
“My name is Evelyn Shaw,” she said. “I lead the forensic review.”
Daniel looked toward the officers.
“Why are they here?”
Officer Grant Miller watched Daniel’s hands.
“To prevent further violence.”
Daniel pointed at Claire’s bruised eye.
“That was an accident.”
Claire said nothing.
Her silence made him more defensive.
“She lost her balance.”
Evelyn opened a narrow pocket on the side of the portfolio and removed one clinical photograph.
Claire’s face appeared beneath examination-room lighting. The bruise was darker. A timestamp showed it had been taken less than an hour after the incident.
Daniel looked away.
“Medical documentation,” Evelyn said. “Along with a physician’s report.”
“You went to a clinic?” Daniel asked Claire.
“Yes.”
“You told strangers about our marriage?”
Claire placed her cup down.
“I told professionals what you did.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
For years, he had depended on Claire describing his behavior as private conflict.
Marriage trouble.
Stress.
A misunderstanding.
The medical report reduced all of that to injury, timing, cause, and evidence.
But the bruise was not what frightened him most.
It was Evelyn’s sentence.
Every fake vendor.
There were companies in his records Claire had never heard of.
At least, he believed she had never heard of them.
Daniel glanced at the closed portfolio again.
“What do you want?”
Evelyn gestured toward his chair.
“For now, we want you to remain calm.”
“I want my attorney.”
“That would be wise.”
Daniel had expected resistance.
Instead, Evelyn welcomed the idea.
People with weak evidence tried to keep lawyers away.
People with strong evidence made room for them.
His confidence weakened further.
Claire slid the untouched coffee toward him.
Daniel stared at it but did not drink.

For the first time, the smell of his favorite breakfast made him feel sick.
👉 Daniel recognized the family seal, but he still did not know which hidden payment had first led Claire to the fraud.
