Chapter 4 - Vendors That Sold NothingEvelyn’s team mapped every payment connected to Northstar.

The pattern looked simple at first.

Bennett Systems paid fake vendors.

The vendors paid hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and luxury retailers.

But deeper transfers revealed something far more deliberate.

Several vendor accounts sent money into a private holding company called Monarch Holdings.

Monarch then transferred funds into businesses connected to Bennett Systems projects.

The structure created the illusion that Claire had personally benefited from the transactions.

Properties owned through her family trust received payments.

Consultants she had once hired appeared on false invoices.

One account even used her home address as a historical registration contact.

“If regulators investigate this without context,” Evelyn explained, “your name appears close enough to the money to raise questions.”

Claire looked at the diagram covering the conference-room screen.

“Could Daniel have done that intentionally?”

“Yes.”

The answer arrived without hesitation.

“He may be preparing to claim you approved the system.”

Claire felt cold.

Daniel was not merely stealing.

He was building an escape route through her reputation.

If the fraud collapsed, he could say the structure came from his wealthy, powerful wife.

He could present himself as the husband who followed instructions.

Claire remembered every time he joked that she was the financial genius in the marriage.

Every time he told executives that she controlled everything.

Every time he insisted she sign broad authorizations without reading the attached schedules.

His public admiration had been preparation.

Evelyn highlighted several electronic approvals.

Claire’s digital signature appeared beneath them.

“I did not sign these.”

“Were you in Chicago on these dates?”

Claire checked.

Two approvals were submitted while she was speaking at a conference in Seattle.

Another was created while she was hospitalized after a minor surgery.

Someone had accessed her credentials.

Someone had used her backup authentication key.

Only three people knew where she kept it.

Claire.

Her security administrator.

And Daniel.

That evening, she returned home without telling him what Evelyn had found.

She walked into her office and opened the drawer containing the backup key.

The velvet slot was empty.

Daniel appeared behind her.

“Looking for something?”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Claire slowly turned.

The man she had married was smiling.

But he was also blocking the door.

👉 Claire had found the forged approvals, and Daniel’s position in the doorway told her he already knew the secret was slipping away.
