Inside were six electronic authorizations bearing Claire’s signature.
Each approved payments to Northstar, Alder, Wellington, or Monarch-linked accounts.
Claire had been outside Illinois when four were created.
One was submitted while she was under anesthesia during surgery.
The final authorization carried a biometric confirmation from her backup phone.
Daniel looked at the document.
“That proves she approved it.”
Claire turned toward him.
“My phone was inside the safe.”
“You gave me access.”
“To retrieve documents during emergencies.”
“Business liquidity was an emergency.”
Martin Hale whispered, “Stop.”
Daniel ignored him.
“You authorized me to act.”
“Not to impersonate me.”
“You benefited from the company.”
Claire’s voice became colder.
“Which company?”
The question trapped him.
If he named Monarch, he admitted knowledge.
If he named Bennett Systems, he had to explain why money left it.
Daniel looked toward the officers.
“This is financial disagreement, not police business.”
Officer Grant answered calmly.
“Identity misuse and forged authorization are criminal matters.”
Daniel’s hands curled.
Evelyn placed a still image on the table.
A hallway security camera had captured Daniel entering Claire’s home office at 2:06 a.m.
He carried her backup phone.
At 2:23, he emerged holding the authentication key.
The timestamp matched one of the forged transfers.
Daniel stared at the image.
“That camera was never supposed to record inside the house.”
“It recorded the hallway,” Claire said.
“You installed surveillance without telling me?”
“The insurance company required it.”
Daniel’s anger shifted toward Martin.
“Can they use this?”
Martin’s silence answered.
Evelyn added a second image.
Seven minutes after Daniel entered the office, a woman arrived through the side door.
Melissa.
She carried a laptop.
Daniel held the authentication device.
They entered Claire’s office together.
The evidence no longer depended on memory.
Daniel could not tell Claire she had misplaced the key.
He could not say she approved the transfer and forgot.
The camera had preserved the moment he turned her identity into a tool.
Claire looked at him across the table.
“You brought her into my office.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“It was not about her.”
That answer exposed the truth.
The affair had never been the deepest betrayal.
