Chapter 12 - The Camera in the HallwayThe third visitor arrived at 3:11 a.m.

Richard Bennett.

He entered through the same side door and stayed inside Claire’s office for nineteen minutes.

Unlike Melissa, he wore gloves.

When he left, Daniel followed him into the hallway.

The camera captured no sound, but their body language was clear.

Richard pointed toward the office.

Daniel crossed his arms.

Richard stepped closer and said something that made Daniel look away.

Then Richard handed him a small black phone.

The second phone did not appear in any company inventory.

Evelyn’s team had been searching for it since reviewing the footage.

Daniel watched the images without moving.

Claire felt something inside her settle.

Richard had supported her after her father’s death.

He advised her during the first years of leadership.

He warned her that Daniel might resent her authority.

He encouraged her to give Daniel more responsibility so the marriage would feel balanced.

Every recommendation had strengthened the conspiracy.

“What did Richard give you?” Claire asked.

Daniel remained silent.

Martin answered for him.

“My client will not respond.”

Evelyn placed a device inventory on the table.

The black phone connected repeatedly to towers near Daniel’s office, the hotels, and Richard’s lake property.

Its identifier appeared in Monarch banking authentication logs.

The phone was the bridge between the men.

Claire looked at Daniel’s charcoal shirt and dark lounge pants.

He had entered the dining room believing he would receive an apology.

Instead, he sat exposed in casual clothing while the structure behind his polished career became visible piece by piece.

“You thought Richard would protect you,” Claire said.

Daniel’s eyes flashed.

“You know nothing about him.”

“I know he sent you toward me.”

Martin turned toward Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel realized the sentence had escaped.

Claire’s pulse quickened.

Richard had introduced them at a charity gala five years earlier.

Daniel always called it luck.

Perhaps it had been recruitment.

Evelyn closed the portfolio.

“We need the second phone.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You think I keep evidence in my bedroom?”

“No,” Evelyn said. “We think you keep it where Richard cannot reach it.”

Daniel’s business phone vibrated again.

A private number.

He looked at the screen and rejected the call.

Evelyn had already seen the routing information.

Richard was calling from an encrypted line.

The moment he learned the family portfolio had appeared, he began trying to control Daniel.

But fear had made Daniel more dangerous to his ally than to Claire.

👉 Richard had entered Claire’s office in secret, and his next call would force Daniel to choose between protecting the conspiracy and protecting himself.
