She had created Northstar’s invoices.
She had also opened the mailbox account using identification supplied by Daniel.
In her recorded statement, she admitted the affair began eighteen months earlier.
Daniel told her his marriage was only a financial arrangement.
He said Claire knew.
He said they stayed together because the Bennett name benefited the company.
Melissa wanted to believe him.
Believing him allowed her to treat Claire as an obstacle rather than a person.
But Northstar eventually became more than a way to hide hotels.
Daniel ordered Melissa to submit consulting invoices worth far more than their personal expenses.
When she asked where the excess money went, he told her not to confuse access with authority.
That phrase frightened her.
Months later, she discovered payments flowing from Northstar into Monarch Holdings.
Melissa had never heard of Monarch.
She searched company records and found Daniel’s name missing from every registration.
Someone else controlled it.
The morning after Daniel injured Claire, he sent Melissa one message.
Delete every Northstar file before nine.
Instead, she called Evelyn.
Now Daniel sat in the dining room listening as the investigator summarized the statement.
He looked toward Claire.
“You are using my employee against me.”
“She contacted us,” Evelyn said.
“Because Claire threatened her.”
Claire’s voice remained quiet.
“I did not know she had spoken until this morning.”
Daniel turned to Martin.
“Tell them this is coercion.”
Martin did not respond.
Evelyn removed a bank record.
“Northstar received 3.2 million dollars over eighteen months.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Hotel and travel expenses accounted for less than four hundred thousand.”
No one spoke.
“The remaining funds moved into Monarch Holdings.”
Evelyn slid the record toward him.
Daniel refused to look.
That refusal was its own recognition.
Claire leaned forward.
“Who owns Monarch?”
Daniel stared at her bruised face.
“You always wanted control of everything.”
“That is not an answer.”
“You are destroying hundreds of jobs over a marriage problem.”
“The affair is a marriage problem,” Claire said. “The missing money is a crime.”
His hands began shaking.
Martin noticed and placed one hand over Daniel’s wrist.
“Do not speak.”
Daniel pulled away.
“You do not understand what happens if Monarch is exposed.”
The room froze.
Evelyn had not said exposed.
She had only asked who owned it.
