“Did Daniel know the purpose?”

Claire felt the answer more deeply than she expected.
Richard continued.

“And now you want the jury to believe Daniel controlled you?”
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“No. I want the jury to understand he became more ambitious than useful.”
Daniel’s restraint broke.
“You told me she would never find out!”
The judge ordered him silent.
Richard continued.
“He believed Claire’s emotional attachment made her predictable.”
For the first time, Richard looked directly at his niece.
“So did I.”
It was not an apology.
It was recognition.
The prosecutor asked about the insurance amendment.
Richard admitted creating the beneficiary structure.
He claimed it was protection against business collapse, not a plan for Claire’s death.
Then the prosecutor displayed the timeline found in his luggage.
