Chapter 7 - Breakfast as a TrapAfter Daniel recognized the seal, the dining room became unnaturally quiet.

His business phone vibrated beside the portfolio.
Once.
Then again.
He glanced at it but did not pick it up.
Claire noticed the caller’s name.
Melissa Crane.
Daniel turned the screen facedown.
Evelyn sat across from him.
“Your attorney is welcome to join us.”
“He is on his way.”
“Good.”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
“You cooked. You brought police into our home. You arranged an investigator.”
“I prepared after you hurt me.”
“That is the same thing.”
“No, Daniel. Planning is what you did with the vendors.”
His face tightened.
Officer Grant shifted slightly when Daniel’s hand moved toward the table.
Daniel stopped.
He looked around the dining room for the first time.
Claire’s work laptop was gone.
The locked cabinet near the hallway stood open and empty.
Her framed company certificates had been removed from the wall.
“You took business property.”
“I removed my property.”
“I run that division.”
“You did.”
The past tense frightened him.
His phone vibrated again.
Melissa.
Then a message from the company’s chief financial officer.
Then another from a private number.
Daniel’s breathing became shallow.
“What have you frozen?”
Claire lifted her coffee.
“I did not mention frozen accounts.”
He realized the mistake.
Evelyn did too.
She opened a slim section of the portfolio and removed one photograph.
A rented mailbox in downtown Chicago.
“Are you familiar with Northstar Consulting?”
Daniel answered too quickly.
“No.”
Evelyn placed a hotel receipt beside the photograph.
His eyes moved directly to the date.
Claire saw recognition.
“Interesting,” Evelyn said. “You knew where to look.”
Daniel pushed the paper away.
“I recognize company formatting.”
“You just said you did not know the vendor.”
“I know how invoices look.”
Every sentence narrowed around him.
His attorney arrived before Evelyn asked the next question.
Martin Hale entered carrying a leather briefcase and the exhausted expression of a man who had already received several alarming messages.
He looked at Claire’s bruise.
Then at the officers.
Then at the family seal.
His face became professionally blank.
“Daniel,” he said, “stop speaking.”
Daniel leaned back.

For the first time that morning, he obeyed someone.
👉 Daniel’s lawyer silenced him, but the incoming calls on his business phone were already revealing which accomplices feared Claire’s investigation.
