His posture had changed.
The rage remained, but beneath it appeared something Claire had rarely seen.
Helplessness.
“What did Richard say?” Evelyn asked.
Daniel looked toward Martin.
His attorney shook his head.
“Do not answer.”
Daniel ignored him.
“He said I created the problem.”
Evelyn waited.
“We created it,” Daniel added.
The sentence entered the room like a confession.
Martin stood.
“I am advising my client to stop.”
Daniel slammed one hand against the table.
“He built Monarch.”
Claire watched carefully.
“Then why did the money move through your vendors?”
“Because I had access.”
“To my company.”
“You were going to ruin it.”
Claire stared at him.
“How?”
“Your expansion plans were reckless.”
The old story again.
Claire’s ambition.

Claire’s responsibility.
Evelyn placed the real revenue reports beside the false projections Daniel had shown the board.
The company had not been failing.
Its strongest divisions produced record profits.
Daniel and Richard redirected those profits before quarterly reporting.
They created the losses they later blamed on Claire.
Daniel’s mouth opened.
No answer came.
Eleven million dollars had left the company.
But Evelyn believed more remained hidden.
Alder Strategy received large payments that never reached Monarch.
Wellington Events transferred money into an account controlled by an unknown legal-services firm.
The fraud extended beyond the known structure.
“What did Alder pay for?” Evelyn asked.
Daniel looked toward the closed portfolio.
“You already know.”
“If we knew, I would not ask.”
His eyes narrowed.
He was trying to decide whether she was bluffing.
Claire recognized the calculation.
For years, Daniel had used uncertainty against her.
Now Evelyn used it against him.
“Insurance,” he said finally.
Martin closed his briefcase.
“I cannot continue advising you if you refuse to listen.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What insurance?”
Claire’s voice was quieter than before.
Daniel looked at her bruised eye.

Evelyn removed a sealed envelope from the portfolio.
“We found an amendment to a key-person policy.”
Claire’s name appeared on the first page.
The coverage amount was fifty million dollars.
The beneficiary was not Bennett Systems.
It was a crisis-management entity controlled by Monarch Holdings.
Claire’s forged signature appeared at the bottom.
The amendment had been filed twelve days earlier.
Before she discovered the hotel receipts.
Before Daniel injured her.
The conspiracy did not only profit if Claire lost the company.
