Chapter 21 - The Director Who RefusedThomas Reed did not request privacy.

He opened a folder in front of everyone.

Six months earlier, Richard had asked him to review projections showing severe losses in two Bennett Systems divisions.

Thomas recommended restructuring.

He also approved two emergency vendor transfers.

Richard told him Claire had authorized both.

“I believed him,” Thomas said.

Claire looked directly at him.

“Why did you not confirm with me?”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Richard said your marriage was unstable. He said direct questions might cause you to act emotionally.”

The boardroom became still.

Richard leaned forward.

“You approved the documents voluntarily.”

“Based on false representations.”

Thomas displayed an email.

Richard instructed him to support Claire’s temporary suspension once the liquidity crisis became public.

The message ended with one sentence.

Daniel will manage her reaction.

Claire read the words.

Her bruise throbbed.

Richard had not instructed Daniel to strike her directly.

But he understood how Daniel controlled her.

He expected fear inside the marriage to manage the company outside it.

Thomas continued.

After seeing the emergency meeting notice, he compared the false projections with independent sales data.

The divisions were profitable.

Revenue had been redirected into fake vendor obligations before reporting.

“I should have spoken earlier,” he said.

Claire did not comfort him.

His fear had protected the conspiracy.

But his decision to speak now mattered.

Thomas proposed a new motion.

Immediate suspension of Richard Bennett.

Revocation of his system access.

Independent preservation of every executive account.

The vote passed nine to two.

Richard stood at the head of the table, stripped of authority in less than five minutes.

He looked toward Claire.

“You still need the board to believe you.”

“No,” Claire answered. “I need the records to survive you.”

Security disabled Richard’s access before he reached the elevator.

His phone, email, and private storage accounts were preserved.

The board appointed Claire temporary chair of the emergency review.

She remained chief executive.

The company’s public statement described an internal governance investigation without naming individuals.

Richard left the tower through a private entrance.

He did not go home.

He drove toward a charter airfield outside Chicago.

By the time investigators learned, his aircraft was preparing for departure.

But Richard had forgotten one thing.

The black phone he gave Daniel connected automatically whenever his encrypted account became active.

The recovered device showed his location.

Police reached the airfield before the plane moved.

👉 Richard tried to flee after losing control of the board, but the luggage beside him contained evidence of a second plan against Claire.
