Chapter 5 - The Night Claire Stopped Protecting HimClaire held the empty authentication case in one hand.

“Where is the key?”
Daniel leaned against the office door.
“You move things constantly.”
“I have never moved this.”
“You forget more than you realize.”
It was one of his favorite tactics.
Small doubts.
Corrected memories.
Conversations he insisted had happened differently.
Claire placed the case on her desk.
“I know about Northstar.”
Daniel’s expression did not move.
“I know about Alder and Wellington too.”
Still nothing.
Then she said, “I know the signatures were forged.”
His jaw tightened.
“Who have you spoken to?”
“Why does that matter?”
“Because you are damaging my company.”
“Your company?”
“You gave me control.”
“I gave you a job.”
The words landed between them.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You always do that.”
“Do what?”
“Remind me that everything belongs to you.”
Claire’s voice remained steady.
“I reminded you that the responsibility belongs to me.”
He grabbed her wrist.
She pulled back.
“Let go.”
“You are not thinking clearly.”
“I said let go.”
The movement that followed happened quickly.
Daniel shoved her away from the office door.
Claire lost her balance and struck the corner of a cabinet.
Pain burst around her left eye.
For a moment, the room blurred.
Daniel froze.
Then his face changed—not into remorse, but anger that the evidence was visible.
“Look what you made me do.”
That sentence ended something inside her.
Claire touched her face.
Her fingers shook.
Daniel began explaining immediately.
She had surprised him.
She had become aggressive.
He was trying to stop her from leaving while emotional.
Claire heard the familiar machinery of his defense assembling around her.
This time, she did not argue.
She picked up her phone.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Who are you calling?”
“No one.”
She walked past him.
He did not stop her because he assumed silence meant surrender.
Claire locked herself inside the guest bedroom, photographed the bruise, and sent the images to Evelyn.
Then she called a medical clinic.
Daniel slept upstairs believing his wife would protect the marriage by morning.
Claire left the house before dawn.
She took her laptop, personal documents, authentication devices, and every company file Daniel could reach.
When the clinic nurse asked whether someone had caused the injury, Claire almost gave the old answer.
It was complicated.
It was an accident.
We argued.
Instead, she said one word.

“Yes.”
👉 Daniel believed Claire had gone somewhere to calm down, but she was turning the injury into a record he could no longer rewrite.
