Chapter 30 - The Weekend Without AnswersClaire returned to the Chicago house for the first time since breakfast.

The dining room had been preserved during the investigation.

The chair Daniel kicked backward stood near the wall.

A faint coffee stain remained beneath the place where Evelyn slammed the portfolio.

The chandelier reflected warm evening light across the table.

Claire entered alone.

Evelyn waited in the foyer.

Officer Grant remained outside.

No one rushed her.

Claire touched the back of Daniel’s chair.

The room looked ordinary.

That disturbed her.

So much of the marriage had looked ordinary.

Shared meals.

Charity dinners.

Photographs.

Travel.

His hand at the small of her back while he lied to rooms full of people.

She walked upstairs.

The guest bedroom where she locked herself after the injury remained untouched.

Her torn sleeve rested inside an evidence bag on the dresser.

Claire did not enter the former master bedroom.

She closed its door instead.

That night, she slept in the guest room.

For the first time, the silence did not feel dangerous.

It felt empty.

Emptiness could be rebuilt.

The jury remained out on Monday.

Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.

Investors called.

Board members requested decisions.

Claire delegated everything possible.

She attended a counseling session.

The therapist asked what outcome she feared most.

“That they believe him.”

“Which him?”

Claire thought about it.

Daniel had many versions.

The charming husband.

The resentful executive.

The frightened defendant.

The betrayed accomplice.

The man who said she fell.

The man who said she forced the situation.

“The version that makes my survival look like aggression.”

The therapist nodded.

“That version existed before the jury.”

Claire understood.

The verdict could punish crimes.

It could not erase every stranger’s misunderstanding.

Her recovery could not depend on universal belief.

On Tuesday morning, the court called.

The jury had reached a decision.

Claire dressed in the same cream floral dress.

The bruise was almost gone.

She considered makeup.

Then decided against it.

The mark belonged to evidence, but she no longer needed it to speak for her.

At the courthouse entrance, Evelyn asked whether she was ready.

Claire answered honestly.

“No.”

Then she walked inside anyway.

👉 The jury had reached its verdict, but Daniel’s reaction would reveal whether he had learned anything beyond fear.
